Note: This is a long post. Please make yourself familiar with all the steps before proceeding with the upgrade!
Quick update: Once FRG33 is installed, you don’t have to go through with the rest of the updates. People have confirmed the OTA’s come through pretty fast. In my case they didn’t and I was impatient and applied the updates manually. Also thanks to everyone for confirming the passimg step. I have updated to reflect this.
Additionally, for those having troubles with files, try use the MD5Sum’s to confirm file integrity.
For the passimg step, make sure you extract PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_release_signed.zip from Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip, and then rename it to passimg.zip. If you are using windows, make sure its not been renamed passimg.zip.zip.
Gingerbread has finally been released, and once again, I have found that my Nexus One is burdened by a Vodafone UK ROM, blocking me from receiving the Gingerbread update. Google designed the Nexus one to be open and updated regularly, but Voda are hindering this by needing to first “check the firmware” before allowing their branded phones updates. I am not getting the Nexus One experience Google intended. My best guess is that there is some sort of key or certificate that is installed on the phone that the software update process uses to check if the signed update file can be installed on the phone. Its time to ditch this Voda Rom!
I am going to install stock US google rom.
This is the message that started me down this path. When trying to install the Gingerbread image from the link, I got this message:
“– Install from sdcard…
Finding update package…
Opening update package…
Verifying update package…
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.”
I then discovered there was another release since 2.2.1 – FRG83G 2.2.2. But after downloading and attempting to apply that update I got the same error.
Standard Warning
Anything you read on this page, you carry out at your own risk. Whilst a lot of your phone is backed up in the cloud by Google, there will be lots of things that aren’t. Make sure you know which apps store data on the phone, and see if you can back this up to the SD card. Additionally, you should take a backup of your SD card contents to your computer.
Procedures
During the upgrade process you will need to repeat these steps documented here. Make sure you are familiar with them before starting the upgrade process.
Coping files to SDcard
For each update you will have to copy a file to the SDcard. In one case you will rename to passimg.zip, but for the rest of the updates, simply update.zip. Ensure you safely eject the media from your computer, and then turn USB storage off before rebooting.
HBOOT Mode, Recovery Mode, Applying an update.zip
- Power down the phone.
- Hold the Volume Down button and press and release the power button. Do not release the volume down key until you see this screen:
- You will see the screen flash up some messages and then return to the screen above. It is simply the device searching for a number of predefined images, such as passimg.zip which you will use when you are installing the default Google ROM. For this process don’t worry about it
- Use the Volume Down key to select Recovery. The phone will now appear to reboot, and you will see Nexus One logo, and then you will be presented with the following screen:
- To continue, hold the power button and tap the Volume Up key. Once you see this screen you can release the power button.
- Use the trackball to select apply sdcard:update.zip. The phone will then go through the process of verifying the image and the system and either patch and unpack a lot of files. The phone may change screens a few times. Sometimes it will autoboot. If it doesn’t autoboot, you will simply be presented with the Recover menu. Select Reboot from the menu and you are ready to move onto the next step.
PASSIMG.ZIP Update Method
This method you will have placed the file passimg.zip into the root of the SDCard. Get into the HBOOT menu like above following steps 1 – 2 only. Once you are into the HBOOT menu, it will automatically take over from there.
Android Version Check
After each update is applied you should check the version match what I have posted for that step. You can do this by going to
Menu->Settings->About Phone and scroll to the bottom. You should look at the last four fields:
- Android version
- Baseband version
- Kernel version
- Build number
The Upgrade Process
You should be running a 2.2 ROM already, something with a build that is FRG83 at least. This process will downgrade the phone to FRG33 Google Stock ROM and then you will upgrade from there. (I was running FRG83D).
- Download all the update files listed in the Links to Files section at the bottom of this post.
- Unzip Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip. One unzipped you will find a zip file called PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_release_signed.zip. Rename this file passimg.zip and copy to the root of your SD card.
- Use the PASSIMG.ZIP method above to install the file. Once you are in the HBOOT menu, it will automatically start loading the passimg.zip file and then prompt you asking if you want to install the updates. Press Vol Up to install these updates. Once the process has completed, you will be asked to press VolumeUp to reboot the phone.
it may prompt you to restart the phone or restart it automatically for you. (SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS. It was 4am when I did it and I can’t remember anymore). - When the phone has finished rebooting, it will be as if you have a new phone and will prompt you for your google account. Don’t enter your Google account. You should only do this once you have finished installing the Gingerbread update.
- Check your android version information matches the following:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-27237-gbe746fb
android-build@apa26 #1
Build Number: FRG33 - Next you will need the upgrade from FRG33 to FRG83. Connect your phone to your computer, delete passimg.zip from the sdcard and copy 766a101ae02c.signed-passion-ota-60505.766a101a.zip to the sdcard. Rename this file to update.zip.
- Perform the HBOOT procedure above to apply the update.
- Once you are back in, check your android version information matches the following:
Android Version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-27240-gbca5320
android-build@apa26 #1
Build Number: FRG83 - Our next upgrade is from FRG83 to FRG83D. Connect the phone to the PC, delete update.zip from the SDcard. Copy ecb21b752065.signed-passion-FRG83D-from-FRG83.ecb21b75.zip to the SDcard and rename to update.zip.
- Perform the HBOOT procedure above to apply the update.
- Once you are back in, check your android version information matches the following:
Android Version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-27240-gbca5320
android-build@apa26 #1
Build Number: FRG83D - Our next upgrade is from FRG83D to FRG83G. Connect the phone to the PC, delete update.zip from the SDcard. Copy 2854b06b22b9.signed-passion-FRG83G-from-FRG83D.2854b06b.zip to the SDcard and rename to update.zip
- Perform the HBOOT procedure above to apply the update.
- Once you are back in, check your android version information matches the following:
Android Version: 2.2.2
Baseband Version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-27240-gbca5320
android-build@apa26 #1
Build Number: FRG83G - The last step is the one that takes you to Gingerbread. This upgrade is FRG83G to GRI40. Copy 81304b2de707.signed-passion-GRI40-from-FRG83G.81304b2d.zip to the SDcard and rename to update.zip.
- Perform the HBOOT procedure above to apply the update.
- When you get back in you will notice the new Gingerbread look. Confirm your android version information matches the following:
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-59423-g08607d74
android-build@apa28 #1
Build Number: GRI40 - At this stage I recommend a factory rest by going to:
menu->settings->privacy->Factory data reset - Once back into the phone, it will be like new. Enter your Google account details. This is the part that should impress you. It will begin restoring all your settings, including wifi access points. Open the market once this is done. It will be the old market. Go to downloads and it will load up all the apps you had downloaded, down the the exact version you had installed! Later the market application will be automatically upgraded to the latest version so don’t worry too much about that. If your apps stored their settings in the cloud, there will be not much work to be done now.
- Let the downloads finish, and then you will get a notification “X applications Restored.” In my case it was 86.
- Remove update.zip from the SDcard.
Enjoy Gingerbread!!!

i love you!
Thanks for the great post Gianni, your instructions worked perfectly. I have a Vodafone NZ Nexus One and have only recently got the 2.2.1 OTA update. I knew it would be months before I got gingerbread. Now I’m getting the true Google Nexus One experience :o)
Hi. Thanks a lot for your instructions … worked nearly perfectly. Apparently i had problems while downloading the frg33 file and the passimg.zip didn’t worked but a found another one. would be nice if you can also write the checksums of the files so that users can check if the download was successful.
Just because you noted it in step 3: i had to press vol+up to reboot the system.
So thanks again for this really good howto…
Hi thanks for the feedback 🙂
I will put up my md5sums but they are just to verify you correctly downloaded the same file as me.
And thanks for letting me know the missing step. 🙂
Hello,
Is the HTC warranty breached when you install the original Android ROM instead of the Vodafone ROM? I don’t want to root my phone for that reason, but wonder if installing the andorid ROM has the same consequences.
By doing this, can you still receive OTA updates or will it all have to be done manually in future?
Hi. I believe we’ll be able to get future OTA updates from Google direct now. The fact you can manually install the images is proof the phone is now signed with Google certificates.
help me… m using FRG83D.. vodafone UK nexus one ..
when i ma trying for PASSIMG.. it says wrong passimg..
Hi, could you run an MD5sum on 766a101ae02c.signed-passion-ota-60505.766a101a.zip and compare with the results listed in MD5Sums on the page.
It says no image or wrong passimg.
plz help me
I’ll need more information.
Did you download the first file and unzip it? (should be Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip)
Did you copy the resulting zipfile into your sd card and rename it to passimg.zip ? (should be 766a101ae02c.signed-passion-ota-60505.766a101a.zip)
Please use md5sum or similar too to verify the contents of the file against my md5sums provided at the end of the post.
well i had tried ..
Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip file
&
766a101ae02c.signed-passion-ota-60505.766a101a.zip.
but none of this worked. will i hav to root my nexus one what??
Shouldn’t need to root your phone to do this. I’m not sure what is happening in your case.
Did the MD5Sum’s match?
MD5Sum’s does not match..
it says , no image or wrong passimg
Well there is your problem. You had better first re-download file number 1.
Check that the md5sum matches mine. If they dont there is no point trying
to flash the phone.
how to check that the md5sum matches mine…
Zip ur file first and then change it name to update.
It’s not all that often you find a write up as consise and as accurate at this. Step by step it’s perfect and the links to the DLs are a great touch.
I can’t thank you enough!! I’ll be sharing this with everyone.
I’ve got as far as downgrading to FRG33, but it won’t update from FRG33 to FRG83, E: Signature Verification Failed 😦
Checksums are all OK.
Ignore me, tried a different (256MB no less!) SD card, and all was well (at least for FRG33 > FRG83)
On with the step-by-step!
Didn’t work on my UK Vodafone branded N1. I just get the ‘older than main version’ on the first passimg.zip update from FRG83D -> FRG33
Any clues. Completely stock Vodafone N1, never touched.
Take a look here and note the point
“Download FRG83 ROM from here. FRG33 ROM from here can also be used, but might result in “Main version is older” error.”:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nexus_One/Guides_%26_Tutorials#Unroot_.2F_Restore_your_Nexus
Try using the linked FRG83 instead of the FRG33.
Great guide – it worked like a charm for my Vodafone.de N1.
After getting passimg.zip, the phone prompts for reboot, so this is acknowledged.
thanks a lot!
great write-up. Had been fighting with this for a few days. Worked perfect, took about 30min.
Thanks for pulling this together
worked fine for me. However I had to find the passimg file at a different location. also, i had to uninstall market update before I could downloads apps from market again (it updated itself after that). everything seems fine. My nexus was bought from german ebay.
THANKS!!!
please tell me where you downloaded the passimg
Can’t thank you enough.
I was going crazy trying to update my nexus to 2.3.3 or even 2.2.2..
Followed the exact steps and worked flawlessly.
I just had a doubt. I have seem to have found in some forum the folowing file: “656099b119f8.signed-passion-ota-102588.656099b1.zip”. I was not brave enough to try by myself, but wouldn’t it be possible to use that file on step 6 and save a lot of time? (Supposedly the file is the full install of version 2.3.3)
yes luciano u can use that file straight after u installed FRG33.i did it that way and works great.
Dude awesome as job, works great. Easy and simple……. not sure if anyone has informed you but the first download (Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.z
ip) wont unzip for some reason, tried all sorts of different things. In the end I just googled it and found a new download of the file. oh and each step it asks you to reboot.
Please help me. I can’t seem to download the file from the link, “http://shipped-roms.com/download.php?category=android&model=Passion%20(Nexus%20One)&file=Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip”
Every time I try to the file will not open because it is corrupted. Each attempt I make results in a different file size for the file as well. Should the file be opened by the phone?
Also I would like to know if there are any addtional steps that I would need to take based on my phones origin and build.
Android version
2.2.1
Basedband version
32.500.32U_5.12.00.08
Kernel version
2.6.32.9-g6624e39
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Thank you
Never mind it seems my problem was a lack of the correct unzip software. Once that was corrected I followed all the steps and had no trouble at all. Thank you very much for the excellent instructions.
hey what unzip software did you us
Excellent. I also had to use a different passimg.zip (md5 D90635C2D269C6A26F77AE1A681E5424). I was assured by Vodafone NZ that this phone was strictly Google, completely unmodified. Now it is largely thanks to this post.
Thank you thank you thank you!
Hi, I’m having issues downgrading my N1 from 2.2.1 to just 2.2… I downloaded the passimg zip file from your first link, unzipped it, took that new zip file that was inside the original zip, named it passimg.zip, etc etc. When I get to HBOOT screen, it says:
SD Checking…
Loading [PASSDIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading… [PASSDIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading… [PASSIMG.zip]
CID incorrect!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
Yes
No
So I just reboot my N1, as there isn’t anything I can do… I do NOT know how to check MD5sums of a file so I am NOT sure if what I downloaded from your link actually matches the file that you used…
Below is my current N1 information:
Android version: 2.2.1
Baseband version: 32.50.00.32U_5.12.00.08
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-ge8111ea htc-kernel@u18000-Build-149#1
Build number: 2.18.1010.4 CL269298 release-keys
There is something weird about your build number.
It should be something like FRG83D if you have 2.2.1.
I don’t think your phone is running a stock or Vodafone rom based on that.
Well, I live in Asia but I did get my phone from HTC directly…
So… Um… is there anything I can do? I’ve been on countless forums looking for an answer and I thought I found the solution here but I guess not. Your instructions were clear and everything but I guess it won’t work on my N1.
Surprisingly enough, I’m not the only N1 user around with this “unique” build number and kernel number… and neither can they update their N1.
U shouldn’t have any problems downgrading you phone to FRG33. i had the same build number as yours.my phone is bought in hong kong. its an Korean version.
Try to start it all over again and make sure u are not missing something. Also u can have a look here and use the first step in the guide to downgrade
http://mobile.downloadatoz.com/tutorial/800,how-to-make-your-nexus-one-get-android-2-3-gingerbread.html
Good luck
I don`t think is anything wrong with your phone Jen.I had almost the same build number.I live in China. The phone is Korean version.I had no problems going back to FRG33.Maybe you are doing something wrong. Also double check u rename the zip file passimg.zip and not passimg.zip.zip
it doesn’t matter if the phone had FRG83D before or not.My build number was 2.18.1010.4 CL269498 release-keys
Android version
2.2.1
Baseband version
32.50.00.32U_5.12.00.08
Kernel version
2.6.32.9-ge8111ea
htc-kernel@u18000-Build-149#1
Do you see any difference? 🙂
Try do it again
Good luck
I have had the same exact issue. But my information is as follows:
Android version: 2.2.1
Baseband version: 32.50.00.32U_5.12.00.08
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-g6623e39 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build number: FRG83D
I think I will try a different SD to see if that changes anything.
Thank you thank you thank you!
Worked great on my Voda UK Nexus One. Or I hope it will.
Within 30 secs of booting into FRF33, the gingerbread OTA notification appeared. Downloading the OTA now and hope it works.
Either way, this has been a great help and thanks for it!
Cheers,
R.
P.S.: In step 3, it asks for vol-up to restart after the passimg has been installed.
Yup, gingerbread is here and working well. Now to get the home screens set up once again.
I can confirm that: After booting into FRF33, the gingerbread OTA notification just shows up and it works great after restart.
Thanks Gianni!
Clear and concise instructions. Thanks ^^ And yes, at step 3 we’re given the option to restart.
Worked a treat… in fact, I only did the first stage. Once I rebooted the first time after installing PASSIMG.ZIP, the phone found the OTA update to take me directly to Gingerbread, so I accepted it and skipped out the rest 🙂
Same here as well. All good to go! Thanks for the detailed steps, Gianni. 🙂
same here! Gianni, thank you!
Same here..i had my first update installed manualy & later on I waited to for OTA update it did come lil late but I got & now havbe 2.3.4 !!cool man & thanks a lot.
Thanks ! the frg33 downgrade wasnt being downloaded so i downloaded it from another site and after the update, the gingerbread update was waiting for me xD
Your instructions were flawless. Absolutely brilliant. Good bye Vodafone ROM!
So I still have the issue with my PASSIMG attempts. I’ve verified the MD5Sum’s of the files and when attempting to run the PASSIMG attempt, it gives the following error:
SD Checking…
Loading [PASSDIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading… [PASSDIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading… [PASSIMG.zip]
Main image is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
Yes
No
So I’ve rebooted. I’ve tried different versions of the PASSIMG files to no avail.
My information is as follows:
Android version: 2.2.1
Baseband version: 32.50.00.32U_5.12.00.08
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-g6623e39 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build number: FRG83D
Any ideas would be most welcome.
Weird. What you could try and do is first double-check that your SD is:
1) Detected correctly. My 16GB card had slightly dodgy contacts when inserted. After shifting it around a bit, the format SD card function was accessible to me again.
2) Make sure the SD card isn’t corrupted. Try using a different SD card. A 2GB card is about ten bucks.
Failing that basic stuff, I would consider rooting the phone, unrooting it back to normal, then have at it again with the passimg steps.
Rooting in the past has usually been complicated, but there is a popular new rooting program that literally does the entire rooting process for you with a one-click “root” function, as well as a one-click “unroot”. There may be a chance that something in that program will nuke whatever is blocking you and let you proceed after you un-root.
Link is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682. I used the program, and it worked fine for me. I un-rooted it later though, after I decided that I would grab the 2.3.3 OTA first to check it out (the 2.3.3 update doesn’t work with rooted phones).
Hope this helps. Good luck!
For reference, experience with Vodafone N1 at FRG83D.
Installed the passimg update as described and immediately received Gingerbread OTA update.
Bingo.
Many thanks.
thank you! my n1 has been automatically and successfully updated to 2.3 straight after i downgraded from 83D to 33.
just one thing is spotted – when I connect phone to laptop regular green android image with button below appears on the nexus one’s screen asking to press that button to connect the USB storage to the computer, but the wording on the button is “turn off USB storage” where on froyo it was saying “turn on USB storage” (which was understanable). after pressing irrespective to the situation all workings is saying TURN OFF. hope that will be sorted soon.
Also noticed the same problem, seems to be a bug in 2.3/Nexus One
same here….and also sometimes i cant move my widgets…i had restart my phone…
I have a vodafone UK Nexus one….downgraded to FRG33 (used a different file to above as PASSIMG because above was corrupt). Once I rebooted I was immediately offered the OTA update to Gingerbread! It went straight from FRG33 to Gingerbread 🙂
+ 1 here! Downgraded to 2.2, powered on and within seconds got an update to 2.3.3.
Thanks for the instructions.
Anyone else trying this: Need to check the MD5 sums if you’re using the download links, a few of my downloads were prematurely terminated.
Greta One…thanks a lot for such a huge and a great help….finally got rid of Vodafone….and i confirm that after the first step ie., FRG33 and rebboting…gingerbread is waiting for me to get it baked.. 😛 😛 skipped all the steps jus took 15 mins to finish with Gingerbread…thank you sooo much once again….
Tried with Vodafone AU Nexus One. Success!
After the passimg step I got impatient and used checkin to rush Gingerbread. Sure enough, 2.3.3 was on its way.
Just make sure you back up everything… I was too eager and didn’t back up some of my handier settings (sms messages, LauncherPro settings etc). Still, at least it works on the Australian handsets!
Worked for me – brilliant, thanks! Though I did have some trouble with both of the SD cards which I used. One (4Gb) became temporarily read-only, and the passimg.zip file wasn’t recognised on the other (1Gb).
The link to the passimg file doesn’t work anymore (the website expired on 03-18-2011).
Can anyone help me out?
Ok, now the website works, however, when I try to unzip it (using winrar) I get an error message saying “! D:\Downloads\Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip: Unexpected end of archive” while trying to unzip the file.
Any thoughts ? Do I just try to use it as is?
I tried Winzip also, same result.
I compared the checksum and it does not match what was posted above.
Can anyone direct me (and other users) to the correct file to download?
Thanks
I was finally able to download the file properly and everything worked.
Only step used was passimg.zip followed by the OTA update within seconds after reboot.
I should note that the file I was able to DL (from the link above) had a different checksum than what is posted.
The MD5sum I used was: d90635c2d269c6a26f77ae1a681e5424 and all is good.
Hi Am getting the following error:

Am using a standard 2GB SD card. Can anyone let me know the solution for this?
Hey, when i try to downgrade through passimg.zip. It says main version is old.
My current phone details are:
Andriod Version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: 32.50.00.32U_5.1200.08
Kernal Version: 2.6.32.9-g6624e39
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build Number: FRG83D
Fantastic….had been patiently awaiting the OTA not knowing that vodafone were withholding it. Followed your excellent instructions and am now tasting the ginger!
Many thanks.
Si.
It’s not just Vodafone withholding the OTA updates. My carrier is Videotron here in Canada.
I should note that for anyone wanting to do this, take note of your APN entries as they were the only thing that I lost during the update. The APN entries (at least for my carrier) are needed for 3G service. Luckily I had my wife’s phone handy to copy the info needed before updating her phone. Now both phones work perfectly. Speaking of which….
I’m not sure if this was part of the official changes between Froyo and Gingerbread, but while I was running Froyo, my Nexus One would always drop my wifi connection. I researched the problem and found many other N1 owners having the same problem. Now with Gingerbread, the wifi actually stays connected all the time and it even auto connects as soon as I get in range.
By the way, the Nexus One’s APN settings are found in:
Settings->Wireless & networks->Mobile networks->Access Point Names-> two entries here, one for 3G and one for MMS
Verify what info you have and take note of where that info is so you can get back to normal life without issue.
Fantastic guide, really keen to get this all working.
Downloaded the links, but the second link seems to be broken. Is it just me?

Thanks for putting this link…i tried a lot to search but did not find until I saw your post
Hi I just had to comment!
I have a Nexus One on Vodafone UK.
Downloaded stock Nexus FRG33 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Nexus_One/Roms
Follows your instructions and restarted the phone. By the time I went into check the version (2.2) it had already offered me the update straight to Gingerbread 2.3.3!
Thanks!
Hello and thanks for this article! Finally rid of the Vodafone NL restrictions!!!
Thank you !!!
Just after step 3 i received Gingerbread OTA !
But i had to reinstall all my apps, !!
Thanks for the guide, but as someone else reported the update file from 33 to 83 is no longer on the Google site. That is,
http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/passion/766a101ae02c.signed-passion-ota-60505.766a101a.zip
is not available on google. Does anyone else have a copy?
I did find a copy of the passimg for 83 but it is a korean version. It works fine as 2.2.1 but I cannot apply any updates to it.
Any suggestions?
Jeffrey
Many thanks for this resource – -only did it with you help

Hi there, followed instructions and once downgraded for FRG33, OTA update took over and rest is history.
I would like to add though, that my data/applications were not automatically reinstalled on completion of 2.3.3, I had to do this manually. This may be becuase I entered my google info after downgrade to FRG33 and did not tick the box relating to backing up data to google’s servers. Once the OTA update took over (20 seconds later) I was not again asked to enter any google account info.
Also, final details show as:
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-59423-g08607d4 [NOT Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-59423-g08607d74]
android-build@apa28 #1
Build Number: GRI40
Hi, I’ve run into the same problem a few commenters have had; at the passimg step, the install fails, saying update failed, main version is too old (not certain on the exact wording but it’s to that effect). Do you have any ideas on why this is, or how to work around it? Would rooting the phone first help?
Gr8 post!
Thx!
After you have 2.3.3 you can apply 2.3.4 OTA upgrade found here (tested) http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/passion/71d2f9ecd610.signed-passion-GRJ22-from-GRI40.71d2f9ec.zip
Hi,
Thnx for the great post.
Vodafone left me on 2.2.1. and I spend most of the day trying different methods to go to stock rom and update. Your story did it: back to 2.2. and immediately received automatic upgrade to 2.3.4!
Followed your instructions to downgrade to FRG33 and the phone immediately downloaded and installed 2.3.4 itself.
I am so happy.
Thank you, thank you thank you.
/Mike B.
Incredible it’s works, thx a lot, now I will enjoy the last release !!! Yoahouuuuuuu
Brilliant! Absolutley brilliant. Same as Michael above, I just downgraded to FRG33 as in the first step, rebooted connected to WiFi and Gingerbread MR2 (2.3.4) is auto updating! All within 5 min.
Many thanks.
Amazing, freed from vodafone NZ! Thank you!
You are a great man whose actions will echo throughout eternity.
You can retire now, you have affected many around the world with your good work.
A modern day hero.
Translation: IT WORKED! FU VFUK!
Don’t forget that if you use 2-step verification to sign in to your Google account once you’re in Gingerbread you will have to create a special one-time password.

Argh! Sorry, it must be the gingerbread sugar rush making me post so much!
It is WELL worth doing a factory reset as suggested in step 18 and then your phone will look like it’s old self automatically. It doesn’t without.
Excellent post… everything went as described..
Good work.
Many thanks.. Updated UK vodafone to 2.3.3 then got the uodate for 2.3.4

Thank You Gianni. You’re the greatest. Got 2.3.4 OTA at once as well. Absolutely brilliant.
I got a nexus one couple of weeks on eBay. The version details as seen on my phone are below.

Build number: 2.16.405.1 CL223106 release-keys
I would have followed your steps and tried to apply the updates. But Just wanted to check with you once before I did this.
I am not sure what the Build number says, I am new to Android (infact Nexus one is my first android phone).
I am not getting any OTA updates, I check in Settings -> System Updates and it says “System is up to date”.
Thanks.
Well, I went for it anyway and I got through with the passimg.zip step.
Thanks for the steps.
I’ve got the same phone and software that you have. How did you unzip the file and transfer to sd card? It won’t unzip for me.
Hi Bharat , This is Aditya, I also got the same model as you from ebay. Could you please tell which all steps you followed to upgrade your OS. I see so many steps for passimg.zip methods ( 01 thru 21). A clear step by step process from you will be much appreciated. regards Aditya
Great resource – used it to free the phone I bought on Amazon. One of the best step-by-step guides !
Also got the 2.3.4 OTA immediately after connecting to the net.
I just installed first rom PASSIMG, rebooted.. connected to wifi, and got 2.3.4 OTA.
Hi Guys, I seem to be having an issue doing this update/downgrade.
I believe I have followed the instructions, but when I use the Fastboot it cant find a valid image.
I downloaded File 1 and attempted to use that and it scans through fine but is unable to locate a valid image.

Pls help me..I got a nexus one. The version details as seen on my phone are below.

Thank you so much !!!!!
After my Nexus one got stolen, I went and bought a new one….
I needed this guide to upgrade from 2.2
after FRG33 it got OTA update (check system update) to 2.3.4
easy !
Awesome …..
Just after moving to FRG33… I got an OTA for 2.3.4…
Thanks a ton !!!
I’m not entirely sure if I’ll get a response from this, but I’d also much like to know if doing this will void any sort of warranty I still have with HTC. I’m getting to the point where I’m fed up with waiting on Vodafone who still haven’t confirmed a release date and seriously contemplating following through with the steps above. Any info would be appreciated
I did the first part of this taking the phone back to FRG33 and just as I was starting the next step, bam it started downloading 2.3.4 all by itself….
I live in Spain and waiting for Vodafone here is worse than in the US or UK!!!!
Hey everytime i unzip or extract Passion_Google_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM with winzip it keeps on saying error central directory not found. Can anybody please help me
it doesn’t matter any more i also got the ota update to 2.3.4 and if you’re using windows just rename the file to passimg thanks
Hi,
Voda is finally pushing updates for 2.3.x out. But you are still on a Voda signed ROM. You may find the same issues once ICS comes out.
If you really want a stock Nexus One ROM, you need to get rid of the Voda ROM and go with the stock HTC/Google one.
Perfect, no issues at all.
Excellent !!
i was on 2.2 and just did the first 33 passion update by passimg.zip and hboot.
got the OTA instantly to 2.3.4
Thanks
Nexus One
Thank you very very much! I could update my Nexus one to Gingerbread.
Thank you very very much! I could update my Nexus one to Gingerbread 2.3.3. Later on within some time I got system update OTA for 2.3.4.
Thanks so much, worked like a charm – ran the first update back to FRG33 and within seconds gingerbread was being downloaded. Genius

When trying to download the above file, “Was not found on this server” error occurs.
Can you provide new link for the above file?
Has anybody else experienced any issues with Wi-Fi / Network connection since doing the update? I have started having issues only since the update.
When at home at the end of the day I use Wi-Fi and of course I keep this on until I next leave the house next day. In the morning when I leave home and turn off Wi-Fi (it having been on all night) my phone fails to automatically connect to my network (Vodafone UK). Every day I must go through settings, search for the network and then connect. Once I’ve done this in the morning my phone can easily switch back and forth between Wi-Fi and the network through the day with no problems, but for some reason the next day when I turn off Wi-Fi again I have to go through the whole process again!
Does anybody have any ideas?!
Hi Jonathan,
It’s funny you should mention this issue. I am having both issues with my WiFi and my Mobile Data connection.
The latest update 2.3.4 brought back the issue where my WiFi access point is disabled overnight. I have to go into Wifi Settings and reconnect manually.
The Mobile Data issue has only become a problem since my provider (which is a reseller) switched from Optus to Vodafone. I appear to be having the same issue you have described where my Mobile data isn’t working until I do something like disable/enable Mobile data, Switch from Aeroplane mode and back, or turn the radio off/on.
Another thing to note is I had to switch to 2G only since Voda no longer has coverage for 3G in the band my phone supports (900/2100). They are switching over to 850/2100 for their 3G coverage bands and things are only going to get worse for the 900 band.
I have yet to figure out an answer for these issues.
The first guide which has worked! Thank you so much for your help!
Running Gingerbread!
i really love you !
